Vancouver, WA Crawl Space Gets Encapsulated, Solves Two Problems

These Vancouver, WA homeowners wanted to improve the air quality in their home and also decrease their heating and cooling costs. When our Energy Consultant crawled around under their home, he found a crumpled up vapor barrier, evidence of animal infestations, fiberglass batting hanging down, and gaps around the sill plate on the foundation wall.

This couple moved forward with a crawl space encapsulation.  It helps dramatically improve air quality since almost 50% of the air you are breathing in a one-story home moves in to your home from the crawl space. By having the crawl space sealed and insulated so well, it will also help decrease utility costs. Two problems solved with one solution!

R-30 Attic Insulation in Vancouver, WA Home Changed to R-60 for Best Insulating Performance

To help make this Vancouver, WA home more comfortable and energy efficient, sealing and insulating was needed in the attic. It was at an R-30 level, yet code for our area is now R-49, and R-60 is highly suggested.

To make this higher insulation level perform at its best, first the old insulation was removed. This allowed our crew access to seal where there were air leaks. Six lights were covered with can light covers; light fixtures leak a lot of conditioned air from inside the house into the attic.

The crew then blew in to the higher R-60 level TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. It is make of newsprint and treated with borate so critters do not like to use it as nesting material. The final step was to air seal and insulate the scuttle cover to the attic. All of these steps together have made for a much more comfortable home to live in!

Room in Milwaukie, OR Home Made More Comfortable With Attic Insulation

This family in Milwaukie, OR wanted their family room to be more comfortable. Our Energy Consultant visited and determined what was making that room uncomfortable: air was leaking through from the home into the attic through many gaps.  The places with a lot of gaps were around the can lights.  Our crew installed can light covers and sealed around them (see AFTER photo) to help prevent leaks.

The family told us their heating bill dropped dramatically and the family room is much more comfortable now.
